This morning I got into a discussion with a coworker. He is confused about how a laser can shine into a pilots eyes. Apparently he thinks that airplanes are designed so that the pilot cannot see the ground from inside the cockpit.

Kinja'd!!!

This is not the only time in recent memory that I have been amazed by his ignorance, simply the most recent.

I think its less a concern for airliners at altitude simply based on the speeds and distances involved but the angles check out.

My dad got in trouble in the ‘50s for flashing a signal mirror at planes coming in to land at Willow Grove. I figure that’s when aircraft are most vulnerable to this sort of thing.

Sometimes the stupid is so strong that evidence doesn’t matter.

I can just imagine him yelling; “How can a laser shine into a cockpit? What do you mean the windows don’t block light from the visible spectrum!?

Even if the laser doesn’t get a direct shot on the pilot, the light can be blinding inside the plane just from hitting the windows at the right angle. Our plane got lasered on approach to LAX once and it was like being inside a sci-fi space explosion. The whole passenger compartment was nothing but green light.

Aside from the scary part of that... that sounds kinda cool.

Ask him if he knows what a window is

Tell your friend that he does not know how planes are designed and this professional pilot, who has been zapped by a green laser before, is calling him an idiot for speaking factually about things he knows nothing about..

I’m going with Ron White’s theory on this one. “You can’t fix stupid.”

An opportunity to ask a pilot who’s been zapped before so I have to.

It really is that bad right? I imagine it’s dangerous as hell to momentarily blind pilots.

Yes. I was zapped at 10,000 ft and my first officer wasnt sure if he had a problem or if it was psychological. Its that weird kind of bright, not like an intense sun flash. Lower altitude makes it tertibly bright. Green is much hotter light than red laser.

Oh yeah I knew the green laser was harsher. man that sucks, good luck I can’t stand those idiots with the laser pointers.
